Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Newby.
Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I never grew up dreaming about one day starting a pressure washing company, I didn’t even know what pressure washing really was as a service before starting. I always knew I wanted to start a business, but for a long time, I struggled with what can I do? Before pressure washing, I was a truck driver for 15 years so I assumed I needed to start some type of transportation business because it’s all I’ve ever done, but long hours, high overhead, and the cost of entry kept me from ever pursuing ownership in that industry. One Saturday morning, I was helping my fiancé do some landscaping when we got to the side of our house and saw we had a small section of green algae on it. I knew I had seen “$99 Pressure Washing” signs before, but assumed those were bait and switch offers and I only needed a small part cleaned, so we went to Home Depot and bought a Ryobi electric pressure washer. I fired it up and went to work on the green algae, full pressure and as close as I could get (all wrong, but I didn’t know any better at the time). Luckily, I only had an entry-level machine and I didn’t damage my house. But I thought “that was pretty easy”. I assumed I was going to have to get a ladder to clean the second story and figured it was going to take all weekend to clean the whole house. That’s when I started to do some research and figured out that I was doing everything incorrectly. That’s the first time I realized that as a homeowner if I don’t know how to do this, I’m sure a lot of other people don’t know how or don’t want to do this themselves and that was when No Pressure Power Washing was born. I upgraded my pressure washer, binged information for hours every day and we were up and running within two weeks just doing basic jobs. I booked my first few jobs pretty easily through Facebook and during that first week I quickly realized that although I thought driving was my only skill, customer service was something I was really good at and I feel it is the driving force behind our success.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Like most businesses there tends to be bumps along the way. My biggest obstacle to start was finding education so I’d know what I was doing. There is a real fear of using the wrong cleaner on the wrong type of paint and completely changing the color of someone’s house. There are no weekend classes to teach the ins and outs of pressure washing, that I know of. And there are a lot of varying options within the industry from what’s the best equipment, to whether to clean a house from bottom to top or top to bottom (there are really arguments about that). I needed to find one consistent message from one source. There is a lot of free information on YouTube, but I felt if I wanted to be an expert then I needed to invest into some courses. Luckily, I found a great resource which offered educational content, mentors, and a community of top performers in the industry called “The Pressure Washing Blueprint Inner Circle”. The amount of knowledge in one place is the best investment in myself that I could have made
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about No Pressure Power Washing?
No Pressure Power Washing is a professional exterior cleaning company in the Raleigh area. We clean commercial and residential properties. Some of the services we offer are house washing, roof cleaning, gutter cleaning, and concrete cleaning. I think the biggest thing that sets us apart is that we are built to save people time. People nowadays are used to ordering online and getting it within the week. Well, that’s exactly how we’re set up. We offer free online estimates, schedule yourself with online booking, also there’s online bill pay. Another feature we offer is that the customer will get a text when we are on our way with the name and picture of the tech that will be at their house. As much as we like interacting with people, we have a lot of customers that we’ve never met because we’re set up in a way that you don’t have to interrupt your life waiting around for the contractor to show up. We also have an awesome phone team that does scheduling and follow-up calls because some people still like to talk to someone. I am proud that we have become one of the top go-to companies in the area in a short amount of time and have been able to be service provider that people trust
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about this area is that it’s always changing. I’ve been in Raleigh for 12 years, and it’s almost a totally different place since then. If there is anything you feel Raleigh doesn’t have, just wait it’s coming. What I like least about Raleigh is all the traffic. Raleigh is growing so fast it’s like nobody planned ahead, so the roads and highways are being built after all the growth which is leading to traffic everywhere
